VET Basics

‘VET basics’ takes a simple approach to explain the fundamental elements of VET.

Funding

There are a variety of ways RTOs may be funded for the delivery of VET in Australia. Government funding is one avenue for RTO income.

VET Quality Framework (VQF) - Australia wide

The VET Quality Framework (VQF) is a set of standards and conditions used by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), the national VET regulator, to assess whether registered training organisations (RTOs) under its jurisdiction meet the requirements for registration. To obtain and retain registration, RTOs must comply with each of the elements and their associated components.

Qualifications

As one part of the endorsed component of a Training Package, qualifications are a group of Units of Competency ‘packaged’ together as the requirement for working in a particular industry role at a specific level. A qualification is also the official documentation recognising competency in all of the units specific to a particular grouping of units.

Skill Sets and Microcredentials

Skill Sets are a single Unit of Competency or combinations of Units of Competency from an endorsed Training Package, which link to a licensing or regulatory requirement, or a defined industry need or job role. Micro-credentials are small, certification-style courses that focus on a particular area of study to hone proficiency over the shortest possible time.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

The AQF applies in all states and territories and describes the standards for regulated Australian qualifications delivered through schools, higher education institutions and RTOs.

Learner Support

RTOs need to identify any particular requirements a student may have, and then, where needs are identified, formulate strategies to make support available to the student.

Quality Indicators

All RTOs need to report annually on their performance against Quality Indicators.

Industry Engagement

A process used to ensure that assessment reflects current industry practise, Industry Engagement can offer multiple benefits for the RTO as well as the wider VET sector.
