3 Steps to Becoming and Remaining a Quality VET Educator (Webinar Series)

25 September & 2, 9 October 2019
ONLINE

Being a VET educator means having two professions, one as a professional educator, and another profession in the industry area you are teaching in. As a VET practitioner, it’s important to ensure we maintain our currency both in vocational education and training and in the industry area we provide training and assessment. This series will look at how to become and remain a quality VET educator through ongoing strategic planning, engaging in meaningful professional learning and constantly evaluating the effectiveness of our own professional learning.

Participants of this comprehensive series will receive templates to assist with planning and evaluating the effectiveness of their own professional learning to help maintain currency in both VET and the industry area they deliver training.

Key topics covered within the webinar series

Session 1: Step 1 - Know where you are to know where you’re going

The first step in any journey is to know where you’re going and how to get there. Our own professional learning is no different. Before we begin to plan out what we need to do in our professional learning, we need to understand what our current capabilities are and how we measure this. This webinar will explore a range of strategies to determine and measure our own learning needs to ensure we engage in meaningful professional learning to improve student outcomes.

Key points covered within session:

  • How to identify your own professional learning needs
  • Different frameworks to determine learning needs
  • Strategies for measuring capability

Participants will receive a template to assist with identifying their own professional learning needs.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. As the old adage goes, it’s important to ensure there is a plan to ensure you become and maintain a quality VET educator. This session will explore how to develop a plan and engage in meaningful professional learning, based on the needs identified in the previous webinar. Participants of this webinar will receive a planning template to help with the planning process.

  • Determining how much professional learning to undertake
  • Building a framework to guide the types of activities to engage in
  • Consulting with industry and VET practitioners to ensure the relevance of the activities
  • Finding sources of professional learning opportunities

Participants will receive a planning template to assist with planning.

Session 3: Step 3 - Put your plan into practice

Once we have identified what we need to learn and when we are going to do it, it’s time to set off on the journey of our professional learning. This webinar will look at strategies to put our professional learning plan into practice, end engage in professional learning. Once we have undertaken these activities, we also need to maintain evidence and record the activities and then evaluate the impact these activities have on our teaching, learning and assessment services we provide.

Key points covered within session:

  • Engaging in professional learning
  • Maintaining records and evidence of professional learning
