The end-to-end process associated with competency-based assessments is particularly complex and onerous for RTOs. In addition to ensuring a fair and valid assessment that is well authored and tested, the assessment questions or items must all be mapped to one or more of the related competency framework elements and performance criteria and also version controlled. That’s the easy part!
The real burden in delivering and managing accredited assessments involves a range of stakeholders including the student, their teacher/trainer (who is also usually the assessor), their supervisor (for work-based activity), employers, RTO administrators, compliance officers and auditors. As well as ensuring the whole assessment process is auditable, the RTO must also be able to efficiently gather sufficient evidence of assessment in order to deem a student competent.
Invariably, most RTOs struggle to manage this whole process by cobbling together a range of disconnected systems and resources including spreadsheets, documents, email, shared public drive folders, an LMS and, of course, lots of paper and effort! The result is: a very expensive solution.
