Session Overview

Third-party reports can be a powerful part of the assessment evidence mix—but only when they're used correctly, confidently, and compliantly. In this practical session, we’ll unpack the different ways third-party reports can be used in VET assessment, beyond just gathering evidence of competence.

You’ll explore the distinction between primary and supplementary evidence, how to design reports that genuinely support assessor decisions, and how to validate and confirm authenticity. We’ll also walk through real examples and share tips for choosing appropriate third parties and designing reports that are clear, purposeful, and aligned with training package requirements.

This session will cover:

  1. The different purposes of third-party reports – evidence collection, authentication, and support for assessor judgments
  2. What supplementary evidence really is – and when it strengthens your assessment
  3. Designing fit-for-purpose third-party report templates – what to include and what to avoid
  4. Identifying appropriate third parties – who can complete a report and why that matters
  5. Confirming authenticity – simple strategies to ensure reports are valid and completed by the right person
  6. Common pitfalls and how to avoid them – plus tips for trainers and employers involved in the process
  7. Examples and templates – real-world samples you can adapt for your own context

Walk away with practical tools, clarity, and confidence to improve your use of third-party reports and strengthen the overall quality of your assessment practices.
