Assessment remains one of the most scrutinised areas of RTO practice, with regulators continuing to identify recurring issues that affect the quality, fairness and defensibility of assessment decisions. This session will explore several current “hot-button” assessment issues and provide practical strategies for strengthening assessment practice, while maintaining the integrity of relevant training product requirements.

Specifically, the session will focus on how assessors and compliance teams can apply the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence more robustly, particularly when making assessment decisions, but also when supporting learners and identifying flexible approaches to evidence collection. A key focus of this flexibility will be the appropriate use of reasonable adjustment. Advice will be provided to support the selection, application and recording of adjustments aimed at enhancing learner access and equity without weakening the requirements of the unit of competency. Furthermore, the session will provide additional guidance on how to frame clear and useful feedback to learners, especially where performance is deemed not satisfactory.

Finally, the session will explore how assessors can avoid unnecessarily narrow approaches to evidence collection by recognising appropriate alternative ways for learners to demonstrate competence, while still ensuring evidence is valid, authentic, sufficient, and current. By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of common assessment weaknesses, how these issues relate to regulatory expectations, and how to strengthen assessment systems and assessor practice across different delivery and assessment contexts.
