Applying the Rules of Evidence when Evaluating Student Work

26 July 2017
ONLINE

Even with the right intention it is unfortunate that the terms ‘assessment’ and ‘evaluation’ are often used to mean the same thing when they are, in fact, very different processes.
This session commences by clearly identifying the differences between the ‘assessment’ and ‘evaluation’ processes. It then proceeds by illustrating how the ‘assessment’ processes is governed by the ‘Principles of Assessment’ and if used effectively positively influences how the assessor’s judgement (evaluation) of competence can be confirmed through the evidence collected.

How does an assessor do this? They do it through the ‘evaluation’ of the assessment evidence gathered against the ‘Rules of Evidence’.

Regardless of the fact that there is a need to be compliant against the Standards for RTOs 2015, this session indicates how the above processes are a component part of quality assessment practices, but nevertheless the session concludes with indicating the clauses in the Standards that require these practices to be controlled and implemented.

Key topics covered within webinar

  • Assessment versus Evaluation - how these differ and yet work together very effectively
  • Principles of Assessment - morally and intrinsically correct
  • Rules of Evidence - legally and procedurally correct
  • Making these 'fit' with the requirements of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 through pre-assessment validation
  • Importance of post-assessment validation and statistical sampling
