Recorded on 28/10/2020 and forming part of the National VET PD Week, this 90 minute session that includes an extra Q&A session looks at a number of concepts that should drive the design and implementation of an effective and efficient, user-friendly RPL process.

Please note that the revised Standards for Registered Training Organisations were publicly released on 1 October 2024 and will come into full regulatory effect from 1 July 2025.

The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 will continue to apply until then.

This webinar recording refers to, and is based on, the requirements for the current regulatory environment.

Topic overview:

Join our resident RPL Expert for this pre-recorded webinar session to look at a number of concepts that should drive the design and implementation of an effective and efficient, user-friendly RPL process.

In the past RPL has often been an overwhelming process for the candidate AND for the assessor. It has often degenerated into a meaningless and exhausting paper chase.

RPL is an assessment only pathway because the applicant is claiming to be already competent so Assessors need to be experts in the field being assessed, but they also need to avoid becoming a victim of their own expertise.  John explored the idea of working back from the job to the unit of competency (applicants don’t think about units of competency; they think about their job!).  He discussed the importance of staying ‘big picture’ for as long as possible and how to avoid getting bogged down in the details too soon.

This webinar is a fantastic opportunity to gain some real insights into how the following concepts can be used to streamline and simplify your RPL assessment process:  visualising competence; harnessing the power of the competency conversation; helping the applicant generate evidence; focussing on ‘natural’ documents; keep asking, “What is this evidence OF?”; understanding the rules of evidence and using them to tame “wild” evidence, and using other parties to help authenticate evidence.

What was covered in the session:

  • The claim to competence
  • Work back from job to unit of competency
  • Staying “big picture”
