Webinar Recording: Recognition-Based Assessment

Version
VT1.0

Recorded on the 20/12/2021 this webinar explored linking workplace activity and the evidence it generates to the requirements of a unit of competency.

Topic overview:

Recognition of current competence is the formal acknowledgment of a person's current skills and knowledge, no matter how, when or where these were achieved. Recognition can occur in two ways – through recognition of prior learning (RPL) and through the granting of credit transfer (CT). The challenge for many RTOs is how to create a robust recognition-based assessment package that is both candidate and audit friendly.

This webinar focused mainly on RPL. It explored linking workplace activity and the evidence it generates to the requirements of a unit of competency.

It considered a number of common RPL challenges.

It also provided ideas for monitoring and evaluating the developed recognition package so that it remains relevant and meaningful to candidate needs and intuitive to navigate.

What was covered in the session:

  • Identifying the work done by the candidate and aligning it with the purpose, focus and key requirements of the unit of competency for which recognition is sought
  • Using this analysis to “discover” evidence requirements
  • Responding to common challenges when developing recognition-based assessment:
    • dealing with an “already competent” candidate (currency and frequency of performance)
    • dealing with “wild” evidence (rules of evidence)
    • “generating” rather than “gathering” evidence (competency conversation)
    • dealing with evidence that is specific to the candidate’s context
    • satisfying “other players” about the rigour of the RPL process and the validity of its outcomes
  • Developing and documenting a robust recognition package
  • Monitoring and evaluating the recognition package and its outcomes

Webinar content targeted towards:

  • CEOs
  • RTO Managers
  • Compliance Managers
  • Trainers/Assessors
  • Training Managers
  • Anyone who plays a role in the RPL Process

Webinar duration: 60 minutes
