Recorded on 26/04/2022 this webinar provided participants with an interactive and engaging session that showcased a range of resources and programs available through the Disability Awareness e-learning and ADCET websites that can build and support VET Practitioner capabilities in responding to the needs of students with disability.

Topic overview:

This session aimed to involve VET Practitioners in building further understanding about how to effectively engage and empower learners with a disability, ensuring students are well informed, supported, and successfully provided with reasonable adjustments within VET settings.  The session showcased and promoted the Disability Awareness e-learning resources and how these each support capability development and learning design approaches.

It provided participants with key considerations and practices, how to engage with these resources, and how they can be used to build capabilities in teams and enhance VET teaching and learning practice.

What was covered in the session:

  • Current context and impacts for students with disability
  • Rights, responsibilities, and considerations for RTOs, educators and students
  • Strategies and approaches for supporting and empowering students with disability  
  • Opportunities and resources for inclusive building capabilities

Bio of presenters:

Jen Cousins works in SA TAFE’s Quality, Teaching and Learning portfolio as a Teaching and Learning Specialist in Accessibility and Inclusive Education and has extensive experience as a developmental educator, disability advocate, National Disability Coordination Officer and VET practitioner. Jen has been involved in a range of national projects that endeavour to increase awareness of the rights of students with disability in VET and to build educator capability.

Darlene McLennan Darlene McLennan is the Manager of the Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET) ADCET is a national resource that aims to promote discussion, disseminate information, and advice that informs educators, disability practitioners and students with disability on inclusive education, teaching and support within Australia's Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. Darlene also manages the Disability Awareness e-Learning website, which houses e-Learning modules that aim to build awareness and increase understanding around disability. Over 20,000 people have undertaken one or more of the modules. Darlene has nearly 40 years of experience working in the disability sector, of which 18 years are within the tertiary disability sector.
