This paper reviews literature relevant to understanding connections between universities’ intent to offer micro-credentials and the environment that is needed to do so. From this integrated study, the paper distils a number of core concerns and identifies some gaps in the literature.

Australian Skills Classification

The Australian Skills Classification (ASC) was developed to provide a common language of skills to increase understanding and recognition of skills across occupations, sectors, and contexts. Consultation with JSA’s Consultative Forum and with some Jobs and Skills Councils has identified limitations and weaknesses of the ASC including the need for stronger stakeholder input.

Outcome Standards Policy Guidance

This guidance describes the overarching policy intent of revisions to the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) (the Standards), and how they contribute to quality VET, to support a consistent understanding and application of the Standards by RTOs and VET Regulators.

Beyond the standard: motivators of high-performing RTOs (2023)

This research builds upon the work of Guthrie and Waters (2021, 2022) to interrogate what motivates such RTOs to pursue high performance. High performing RTOs were interviewed to explore their understanding of high performance and their motivations for pursuing high performance. This research adds a new perspective to discussions on RTO performance and highlights the varying ways in which providers self-assess performance.

UNESCO-UNEVOC study on the trends shaping the - Future of TVET teaching (2020)

This study aimed to engage the international TVET community to: (i) improve the understanding of the implications of global disruptions; (ii) gather knowledge, insights, experiences; and (iii) highlight promising practices in preparing TVET teaching staff to deliver the skills needed in the 21st century and beyond.

Qualifications

As one part of the endorsed component of a Training Package, qualifications are a group of Units of Competency ‘packaged’ together as the requirement for working in a particular industry role at a specific level. A qualification is also the official documentation recognising competency in all of the units specific to a particular grouping of units.

The CSfW is a framework that describes the non-technical skills and capabilities which are considered essential for successful participation in work.
