This resource considers research and data on what could be considered five enduring issues for apprenticeships and traineeships in Australia. These are congestion and harmonisation, completions, incentive payments and other supports to employers and apprentices/trainees, the interface between the apprentice/trainee and training providers, and the relevance of the current model of apprenticeship training.

Building on the FSO’s initial report into generative AI, ‘Impact of generative AI on skills in the workplace’, the FSO has been examining how the training system should prioritise its response to the impact of this emerging technology on finance, technology and business training products.

VET delivery in regional, rural and remote Australia: barriers and facilitators (2023)

This research investigated how the training sector could better meet the needs of regional, rural and remote Australia. It explored how various stakeholders in the VET system understand local skills needs, and the barriers faced by RTOs when delivering training in such locations.

Apprenticeships: The problem of attractiveness and the hindrance of heterogeneity (2023)

This paper examines a question posed in 2019 in the International Journal on Training and Development: ‘How do we solve a problem like apprenticeship?’ Data sources covering a substantial number of countries are used to present findings on, and analyse, initiatives that have been implemented or that have been considered, and then to develop some analytical constructs to help address the question.

Student support: enabling the learner journey (2025)

This research examines how registered training organisations (RTOs) can more effectively support students throughout their learner journey to help them to succeed.
