VET Legislation and Frameworks

There are various pieces of legislation, guidelines and benchmarks that govern training and assessment activities, and VET practitioners need to understand these requirements.

Training and Accreditation Council (TAC)

The Training Accreditation Council (TAC) is the body responsible for regulating RTOs in Western Australia.

Access and Equity

‘Access and Equity’ is a principle designed to encourage all learners and ensure they are given equal opportunities to training and its outcomes.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Students undertaking nationally recognised training must have a USI in order to receive their qualification or Statement of Attainment, and RTOs must meet the requirements of the USI scheme.

Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)

The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) is a tool which assists both specialist and non-specialist English language, literacy and numeracy practitioners describe an individual’s performance in the five core skills of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Collectively known as ‘Australian Apprenticeships’, both apprenticeships and traineeships offer the opportunity and benefit of being trained and working towards a nationally recognised qualification, whilst working in industry and earning a wage.

Funding

There are a variety of ways RTOs may be funded for the delivery of VET in Australia. Government funding is one avenue for RTO income.

Student Files

RTOs must collect and keep information on their students’ learning activities. Considerations include the creation, maintenance, storage and access requirements associated with those files.

Complaints and Appeals

All RTOs should have a policy and procedures in place for how they will deal with complaints and/or appeals of results.
