The Future of Micro-Credentials in VET

The way humans are working, and learning is in a state of change.

The Australian Vocational Education sector is starting to experience the early stages of major disruption that is happening to all levels of existing, traditional education systems. The Australian Vocational Education sector is at a crossroad, and if it is to avoid facing an Uber/Taxi level of disruption, it will need to re-establish its purpose and relevance for the future as a matter of urgency. We need to look closely and carefully at the future of traditional AQF qualifications and also at the role of micro-learning and micro-credentials.

Will government get it right with yet again another review? The best thing an RTO can do in these turbulent times, is not wait for government to tell them how to operate, succeed or save their business.

This short, sharp session will define the concept of micro-learning, micro-credentials and badging, and will explore the possibilities that each of these could bring to your RTO. It will explore how the current VET system, legislation and regulatory framework already have provision for RTOs to develop and deliver both accredited and non-accredited microlearning and microcredentials.

Insights in the VET market

As the data on total vocational education and training (VET) activity has matured since the first reliable collection in 2015, we now have a greater understanding of the training market and are starting to see some discernible shifts in the type and quantum of nationally recognised VET undertaken by students. Using the latest data from the national VET collections and findings from recent research, this presentation will provide insights into the Australian VET system. It will especially focus on recent work to enhance our knowledge of the patterns of participation and outcomes from VET, and provide first hand examples of data analytic and machine learning techniques that we are employing to segment and better understand the experience of particular client groups.

Key areas to be covered include: the nature and dynamics of the total VET training market, key trends in VET participation and outcomes, the role and function of training providers in the system and new models of data analysis to aid in policy and practice.
