The Australian VET sector requires balancing rigorous compliance requirements with practical instructional design practices. Using the backward design model is a the most pragmatic way to ensure that training actually leads to competency.
The term ‘backward design’ was introduced in 1998 by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins. It describes an approach to curriculum design for school subjects. However, the principles of the backward design model can easily be applied to Australia’s competency-based training and assessment system.
The starting point for backward design is to become familiar with the standards or desired outcomes as specified by units of competency. The second part of the backward design approach is to design the assessments. And finally, the training curriculum is planned.
