It's Time to Focus on Supporting Students the Right Way

It's Time to Focus on Supporting Students the Right Way image

Velg Training and Skills Education are proud to be working together to offer practitioners in the VET Sector a quality, specialised PD program in March 2023.

Focus Weeks are a dedicated week of learning opportunities (one webinar per day) specifically designed to increase the knowledge and skills of VET practitioners in targeted topics.

Showcasing five content-rich, 60-minute webinars over five days, each webinar is focused on a different aspect of Student Support, with each of the 5 topics aimed at complementing and increasing existing practice.

Let's look at the first two great topics:

Students come into the learning environment with a range of different backgrounds, experiences, and varying abilities and needs.

Some are looking for recognition of their existing skills and knowledge. Some have learning needs associated with a disability.

So, how can we truly support students in navigating an RPL pathway or to engage in learning when they have a disability?

The first two webinars from our Focus Week | Student Support are specifically targeting the needs of these two learner types.

Supporting Learners with Recognition for Existing Skills

Presenter: Wendy Cato

We all know RTOs should offer recognition for any existing skills and knowledge to potential RPL candidates.  But not every assessor reports feeling confident about supporting candidates in this process.  In fact, many potential candidates report feeling so overwhelmed with the RPL process that they believe it’s “just easier" to do the course.

So, what can RTOs and assessors do to better engage with potential candidates and support them to navigate an RPL pathway?

This session is aimed at providing information for RTOs and assessors to identify where and how persons with existing skills and knowledge can be guided through a recognition process.  It will also explore some of the key touch points in current RPL processes that cause the potential candidate the most angst before going on to identify strategies that can result in a fairer experience for candidates.

Simple Learning Strategies to Engage and Support Students with Disability

Presenter: Darlene McLennan

Students come into the learning environment from a range of backgrounds and with varying abilities and needs.  And training organisations and their staff have certain responsibilities to ensure everyone has the opportunity to access and participate in the learning.
Join this session with Darlene to hear about ways to:
  • make your organisation more inclusive
  • understand your legislative responsibility under the Disability Standards for Education
  • identify and implement inclusive teaching strategies to support students with disability
  • access the range of resources that support disability inclusion and different disability types

At the end of this session, Darlene will also give a sneak preview into the newly developed ADCET resources specifically for students with disability in VET.
