2023 ACAL Conference: Dynamic Dialogues, Vibrant Literacies: Reflect, Connect, Grow image

The Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) is pleased to announce the 2023 ACAL Conference, to be held in Adelaide on 7 and 8 September.  This year’s conference, titled: "Dynamic Dialogues, Vibrant Literacies: Reflect, Connect, Grow," will provide a forum for adult literacy professionals from across Australia to come together to discuss and share ideas on the latest trends and issues in the field.

Keynote Speakers

The conference will feature a number of keynote speakers, including:

  • Dr Deniese Cox, a leading expert in digital literacy, who will be speaking on the topic of "Digital Literacy: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes."
  • The Hon. Brendan O'Connor MP, Federal Minister for Skills and Training, who will be delivering a ministerial address on the importance of adult literacy.
  • Dave Tout will present the Arch Nelson address: ‘Some reflections and connections: growth and support needed for a critical and dynamic adult literacy and numeracy sector’
  • Thomas Mayo, a leading Indigenous scholar and advocate for Indigenous literacy, who will be speaking on the topic of "The Voice Referendum: Our Defining Moment."


The conference program will feature a variety of sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities. Sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Adult literacy policy and practice
  • Research and theory in adult literacy
  • Digital literacy
  • Indigenous literacy
  • Literacy and Numeracy practice
  • Sludge busting
