RTOs Set to Play a Key Role in Digitally Upskilling Australia!

RTOs Set to Play a Key Role in Digitally Upskilling Australia! image

Predictions show that more than 90 per cent of the Australian workforce will need to use some digital skills within the next five years.

Job roles across many sectors are continuously transforming at unprecedented rates, where some roles and industries are augmented by technology while others are more susceptible to automation.

Australia's economic success will be dependent on its ability to harness new technological advances to improve existing businesses, create new products and markets, and enhance daily life.  Digital skills enable individuals and companies to harness these new technologies and seize new opportunities.

Addressing the digital skills deficit within the Australian workforce is key to achieving this economic success.

Australian enterprises therefore must look to equip their workforce for the 'jobs of the future', with many workers having to adapt their skill sets, potentially change their working habits and, in some cases, the working location to meet the new economy's demands.

The combination of digital skill gaps in the current workforce and the digital skills shortage in the market has created a 'digital skills deficit' that Australia must address to thrive in a digital economy.  The training sector has to play a leading role in addressing this deficit.

The Digital Skills Organisation (DSO) aims to pilot, test, and evaluate an alternative skill development model explicitly designed to build Australia's digital workforce. The DSO will achieve this by trialling new approaches to digital skills development while expanding the role of employers role in the national training system to produce workers with the exact skills demanded by the changing technological landscape.

The DSO aims to:

  • Unify the sector around priorities
  • Engage employers in a meaningful way
  • Put in place a process that meets the needs of the industry, and
  • Create a more digitally skilled workforce better aligned to the workforce's current and future digital skill requirements.

The DSO plans to achieve this by working with employers, peak bodies, governments, and Training organisations to create digital skills pathways that address the Australian workforce's digital skills deficit.
